Crochet 101 - 8 Budget Yarn Brands You Should Know!

This series, Crochet 101, will be helping you with all things I wish I knew as a beginner crocheter. If you read my previous post, you should already have your hooks picked out. Now, it’s time to get into YARN!!!

We all know that yarn shopping is a completely separate hobby than crocheting. This post is for knitters, crocheters, and all beginner fibre artists.

I decided to start with more budget-friendly yarns because when we are first beginning, we don’t always have, or want to spend a TON of money on things. There will be a post about some more luxury yarns in the future, but, let’s start with some that might be easier to access for a beginner!

I will be rating these based on a few things:

  • Value (price per yard)

  • Softness, drape and workability

  • Accessibility

I am located in Canada, so a lot of these yarns will be easily found around me. I will be including brick and mortar stores here, but I will also be evaluating some that I’ve received online. I will ONLY be including worsted weight (aran) number 4 yarns because this is the most popular weight and most brands have a low cost yarn in this yarn weight. Also, all the yarns I will be evaluating will be 100% acrylic, this is because acrylic is generally the cheapest yarn.

Okay, now lets BEGIN! Here are the yarns we will be evaluating. In no particular order:

This is a BIG BALL. So, if you’re making big projects like blankets. This could be the product your looking for.

For $15 you get about 867 yards. It also comes in 60 shades. However, it is kinda scratchy.

I recommend this if you want a durable project. But, maybe it wouldn’t be great for something close to your skin.

You can buy it online on Lovecrafts, Yarnspirations, Amazon (to name a few) and it’s also available in most stores that sell yarn like Michaels, and Walmart. So it’s very accessible.

And if you haven’t at least heard of this yarn, I don’t know where you’ve been!

This yarn is almost every beginners go-to. However, it may not be the softest yarn. But you can get 364 yards for just over $4. The biggest seller for this yarn is that it has about 100 SHADES!!! Thats a lot of variety.

They also have ombre, and variegated colours as well. But, what you do sacrifice is softness. It’s definitely not that nicest to wear close to your skin. But if you want to make something that is a little stiffer and need durability than this could work!

It can also be found almost everywhere (michaels, walmart, etc). And online!

Okay, so I needed to find something soft; So far, we haven’t found anything that would be ideal for garment making

So, let me introduce you to Simply Soft! It definitely lives up to its name! The only things that may not bee appealing to some: it has a bit of a shine to it. So, that may not work for all projects.

And it’s super easy to find, you can get it at Michales and you can find it online!

You get about 315 yards for $5-6 and it comes in over 50 gorgeous colours. It would be GREAT for garment making and baby blankets.

This is a great value for what you getting.

It’s very simular to Red Heart Super Saver, but I do find the softness to be better. It also cost about $4 and you get 360 yards.

However, it has a lot less of a colour range with 40+ colours. The colours are beautiful and I do think this yarn is better for scarves, hats, sweaters. But, is still quite durable!

It’s also very easy to find at your local walmart or online.

We have arrived to one of my personal favourite yarns!

This yarn is SUPER soft and comes in 80+ different colours, which includes some ombre and variegated yarns. It took me a little while to try this yarn because I could only find it online in Canada. But it is sooo worth it!

For $4 you get 359 yards. Also the BIG bonus is that this line comes in DK Weight, Chunky Weight, and a Chenille Yarn (which I use for a lot of amigurumi projects like my Hollow Knight Plushie you can find HERE)

This yarn is perfect for almost any project!

This is another one that is high on the list for me. This yarn ticks A LOT of boxes.

For about $17 you get 1000 yards. So this is another BIG BALL. And you know what they say about big balls… big proects!

This yarn fairly soft, and has a great weight. Which gives it a beautiful drape that will be good for garments, blankets, and almost any project you can think of. Sadly, It only comes in about 20 colours, found at michaels and walmart and directly on the website.

I have been using Paintbox Yarns for quite sometime and I will continue to use them FOREVER!

For about $5 you get 201 yards of yarn. So, it’s a bit on the pricer side. However, I love the texture and drape of this yarn. It’s extremely versatile that it can be used for garments, amigurumi, blankets, etc.

There are 64 shades STUNNING shades. So, it should be easy to find what you need. Also they have them in Cotton, Cotton DK, SImply DK, The variety is INSANE. Here is a link to ALL the yarns for convenience.

You can find it online on Lovecrafts, which is a GREAT site. They always have sales, and give free shipping on orders over $100.

Last but certainly not least. I must say, I was quite surprised by this one!

For $4 you get 354 yards of this yarn. So, the price is right for this yarn when they have over 60+ shades including variegated, ombre, and tweed yarns. The also have some WILD high fluorescent colours too!

The softness is good but a little inconsistant between the different colours. So, you’ll want to give them a squeeze. This is possible because you can (of course) find them at Michaels!
